Phase II Orthodontics for TMD & Pain Patients - Six-Session Residency Program
Program directed by Edmund A. Lipskis, DDS, MS, DABCP, FAACP, FAAFO, FIAO:
Dr. Ed Lipskis graduated from Loyola University School of Dentistry, Chicago in 1981. He joined the faculty and Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Loyola in 1982 where he became an Associate Professor. Dr. Lipskis’ got his initial training in orthodontics at Loyola, when the Orthodontic and Pedodontic Departments merged in 1983. Recognizing his interest in orthodontics, Dr. Lipskis began a 30 year journey with over 2,000 hours dedicated to learning the broad spectrum of philosophies and techniques that orthodontics and facial orthopedics has to offer. He has studied extensively with Dr. John Witzig, the US Dental Institute, Invisalign, Mid America Orthodontic Society, Dr. Dwight Damon/Damon System of Orthodontics, IAO, Sacro Occipital Technique Organization and Dr. Derek Mahony in Australia. Dr. Lipskis’ interests and continued education have expanded to include craniofacial orthopedics, treatment of chronic pain, TMD, and sleep disordered breathing. Dr. Lipskis has been in private practice in St. Charles, Illinois for 29 years with focus on Orthodontics,TMD and Sleep Disorders.

• Review of MMI: What does it mean? Why can’t some patients wean?
How do you know when you are there?
Informed consent for Phase II Orthodontic treatment.
• Review of orthodontic diagnostic principles:
Taking MMI records (what is necessary before Phase II)
Review of Cephalometrics
• Intro concepts of 3D position correction
• Discuss reasons that Phase II is necessary and how this may complicate Ortho Tx
• Cant correction - identification and determination
• Review patient records; create Tx plans for patients to be seen in sessions 2-6
Session 2
• Review of types of orthodontics: passive ligation vs twin brackets
• Removable appliances vs fixed
• Discuss principles of 3D correction
• What do you do when your patient becomes symptomatic
• Laser therapy and ETPS (Needleless Electrical Acupuncture)
• Identifying if and where inflammation exists and how to address
• Initiate interdisciplinary Tx for optimum results
• Meet new patients and bracket
Session 3
• Airway: What is its role? How does it influence treatment?

• Techniques to close Anterior open bites
• Techniques to close posterior open bite
• Do you always need to maintain all of the Phase I vertical OR can it be reduced?

• Different approaches to cant correction: TADs, removable appliances, fixed

How to avoid creating a dual bite
